That was when the glaciers finally began to retreat.

The indigenous people of the time used spears with stone points. This was necessary to hunt caribou.

Another historical fact is that the arrival of archaic peoples to the lake took place about five thousand years BC. Evidence of this culture can be found in the western and eastern parts of the Canadian coast. These people used bows and arrows as well as fishing, hunting and copper mining. From the latter they made tools, weapons and nets.

It is interesting to note that these people are direct descendants of the Cree and Ojibwe.

Important records

Historians have also found evidence near the lake that the population of that time boldly organized fishing with the help of a net.

Other Peoples

During the 900s and 1650s AD, people who hunted, fished, and gathered berries lived near the lake area. These were the Algonquin people. They used snowshoes, birch bark canoes, and their habitat was represented by conical and domed houses.

Another people who lived around the lake were the Anishinaabe. These people lived in the area for five hundred years. After the Europeans appeared in this area, the people began to act as intermediaries between categories such as French fur traders and other indigenous peoples.

Eventually, the Anishinaabe became the dominant Indian nation in the region.

Business competition

By the eighteenth century, when all of Europe was actively buying beaver hats, the Hudson’s Bay Company had a virtual monopoly in the lakes region. It lasted until 1783. That is, until the North West Company was formed. The North West Company began building forts around Lake Superior.

In 1821, however, both companies suffered heavy losses due to competition. This made them think about merging.

It is worth noting that many towns around the lake have the status of former mining areas. They were also processed there.

Over time, the lake area, with its rugged coastline and wildlife, began to attract the attention of many tourists.

Navigation

Speaking of the history of Lake Superior, it should be noted that it was an important link in the waterway of all the Great Lakes. It was this body of water that helped provide a route for the transportation of grain, iron ore, and other industrial materials.

Large cargo ships were used to transport these goods across the reservoir of Lake Superior.

The nineteenth century was marked by the beginning of shipping on Lake Superior.
