Roughly a third of it is left in a natural state, which is why a single visit can take in a free zoo, a 19th-century cottage museum and one of the city&#8217;s best-loved cherry-blossom groves. It is equal parts nature reserve and family playground, and Torontonians treat it as their communal backyard.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cherry blossoms (sakura)<\/strong> \u2014 over 2,000 trees, concentrated on Cherry Hill and along Grenadier Pond; the bloom is the city&#8217;s spring ritual.<\/li>\n<li><strong>High Park Zoo<\/strong> \u2014 free and open year-round since 1893, home to capybaras, bison, llamas, peacocks and emus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grenadier Pond<\/strong> \u2014 a 14-hectare pond and Environmentally Significant Area, ringed by walking paths and fishing spots.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colborne Lodge<\/strong> \u2014 an 1837 Regency cottage and historic-house museum built by the park&#8217;s founder.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oak savannah<\/strong> \u2014 Toronto&#8217;s most significant remnant of black-oak tallgrass prairie, rare in Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park is built around Grenadier Pond and a core of protected woodland, threaded by former park roads that now serve as car-free walking and cycling routes. Admission is free and the grounds are open daily; the zoo and museum keep their own hours. On spring blossom weekends the park closes to cars, so plan to arrive on transit or on foot. The park is large \u2014 set aside at least half a day to see the pond, zoo and gardens without rushing.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is the marquee season, when the sakura bloom draws the whole city for a short, spectacular week in late April or early May. Summer brings the outdoor pool, the zoo and open-air theatre; autumn lights up the savannah and woodland in colour; and winter opens the hills for tobogganing and the trails for skiing and snowshoeing.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park opened to the public in 1876 through a bequest from architect John George Howard, who had bought the land four decades earlier and asked that it remain for the free enjoyment of the citizens. His 1837 home, Colborne Lodge, still stands on the south rise.
