in 1901, and for more than thirty years it has been the city&#8217;s best-known experiment in a park shaped by the people who use it. It is free and open year-round, with no gate. The market runs on Thursday afternoons; the rink runs through the skating season. Half an hour covers a walk-through, but the park rewards settling in \u2014 most people come for a market run or a skate and stay for a couple of hours.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Thursday afternoon is the busiest and best-tempered time in any season, when the market takes over the middle of the park. The rink runs from late autumn to early spring, weather and refrigeration permitting, and evening shinny fills the hockey pad. Summer brings the wading pool, outdoor theatre and the food programs at their fullest. Autumn is the quietest and prettiest, once the market has moved to its cold-weather rhythm and the mature trees turn.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worth_knowing\"><\/span>Worth knowing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The land was part of the Denison family estate \u2014 Captain John Denison arrived from England in 1792 and his descendants farmed and later subdivided the area \u2014 and the City assembled the park lots through a tax sale, opening the park in 1901. The recent north-west corner project rebuilt the rink slabs, added a Zamboni garage, a basketball court and a public plaza, and reworked drainage, paths, stairs and planting, while the clubhouse interior was renovated around it. The bake ovens are in a harder spot: the north oven was damaged by fire on 8 December 2023, the City has since put it through a three-stage public consultation, and construction on a rebuilt oven is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2026, closing it for the duration \u2014 while staff assess the extent of damage to the south oven. A playground, a soccer field, a skating rink, a skateboard park.
