Does writing it down change how it lands?

It changes almost everything, which is why the card works where the conversation does not. Written down, nobody has to hold eye contact, nobody has to produce an answer within two seconds, and he can read it twice in private with no audience. The awkwardness people expect comes from length and vagueness rather than from feeling: a page of general warmth with nothing specific in it is what makes a brother squirm, while five sentences anchored to one real thing he did is simply true. Expect the reply in a different currency — a short thanks, or a phone call about something else a week later.

How long should a heartfelt birthday message to a brother actually be?

Four to six sentences covers it, and there is a reason that length keeps working. It is long enough to include a memory, a piece of recognition and a wish, which is the movement that makes a message feel personal, and short enough that it does not read as a letter demanding a response. Anything shorter collapses into a formula, and anything longer starts sounding like a speech at a retirement. If you find yourself past a paragraph, look at what you added: it is usually a second version of the same sentiment rather than a new thought, and cutting it makes the message stronger.

Older brother, younger brother — does the wording really need to be different?

It does, because the two of you are recognizing different things. Writing up to an older brother, the material is usually what he went through first and what he absorbed on everyone else’s behalf, and the message works as thanks that has never been said plainly. Writing to a younger one, the material is the change you have watched: the point where he stopped needing looking after. Keep an eye on the tone rather than the content, since a message to a younger brother slides easily into the register of a report card. If it starts sounding like praise from above, cut the evaluation and say what you noticed instead.

I live far away and will not be there on the day. Does the message have to apologize for that?

No, and an apology usually makes it worse, because it hands him something to reassure you about on his own birthday. Say the true version instead: that you are thinking about him, that the distance is the part you would change, and that you want to hear how the day went. One line about missing the ordinary things — the news, the arguments about nothing — does more than a paragraph of regret. Avoid promising a visit unless the date is real, since an invented plan is remembered and quietly checked against next year. And send it early enough in his day that it is not competing with the evening.

Our parents are gone, and the birthday is now just the two of us. What changes?

The message quietly takes over a job somebody else used to do, and it is worth doing it deliberately. In most families one parent was the keeper of dates, the first call of the morning, the one who made a fuss, and the first birthdays without that person feel thin for reasons nobody says out loud. You do not need to name the loss to answer it — showing up early, in writing, with something warmer than usual is the answer. If you do mention them, one sentence is the right size, placed in the middle rather than at the end, so the message finishes on him and on the year ahead rather than on the absence.

Brothers are the hardest people to write to, because the two of you have spent a lifetime not saying this kind of thing out loud.
