High Park — Toronto’s 400-acre green heart, from cherry blossoms to a free zoo

High Park is the largest park in downtown Toronto — 161 hectares of manicured gardens, rare oak savannah, spring-fed ponds and open woodland stretching down the city.s west end toward the lakeshore. Roughly a third of it is left in a natural state, which is why a single visit can take in a free zoo, a 19th-century cottage museum and one of the city’s best-loved cherry-blossom groves. It is equal parts nature reserve and family playground, and Torontonians treat it as their communal backyard.

Getting there & practical

High Park sits in Toronto’s west end and is easy to reach by subway — High Park station sits at the north gate, with streetcars along the south edge. Admission is free and the grounds are open daily; the zoo and museum keep their own hours. On spring blossom weekends the park closes to cars, so plan to arrive on transit or on foot. The park is large — set aside at least half a day to see the pond, zoo and gardens without rushing.

When to visit

Spring is the marquee season, when the sakura bloom draws the whole city for a short, spectacular week in late April or early May. Summer brings the outdoor pool, the zoo and open-air theatre; autumn lights up the savannah and woodland in colour; and winter opens the hills for tobogganing and the trails for skiing and snowshoeing.

Good to know

The park opened to the public in 1876 through a bequest from architect John George Howard, who had bought the land four decades earlier and asked that it remain for the free enjoyment of the citizens. His 1837 home, Colborne Lodge, still stands on the south rise. The grounds carry thousands of years of Indigenous presence, and the oak savannah is a living remnant of the landscape that once covered this shore.

• During blossom season, come early on a weekday — weekends are shoulder-to-shoulder and cars are barred.
• Wear comfortable shoes and budget half a day; the park is bigger than it looks from the gate.
