Toronto boasts a vast number of beaches, parks, and green spaces, all serving as recreational havens for both residents and visitors. The metropolis, while abundant in skyscrapers, architectural marvels, and various historical monuments, also offers a much-needed escape from the urban hustle and bustle, allowing people to reconnect with nature. Locals truly cherish these natural retreats. Hanlan’s Point Beach is, without exaggeration, a unique destination. It’s not just a beach; it’s a special place for many communities within the city. Hanlan’s Point Beach is considered one of the ten oldest surviving queer spaces globally and the oldest surviving queer space in Canada. History of Its Creation

This location gained popularity in the late 19th century. Starting in the 1880s, Hanlan’s Point amusement park was situated here. In 1880, John Hanlan built the Hanlan’s Hotel and Hanlan’s Point Stadium.
Unfortunately, the hotel burned down in 1909 and was never rebuilt after the fire. As for the park, it couldn’t withstand the competition. The stadium was also closed, and construction began on the Toronto Island Airport in its place.
It’s worth noting that from the 1950s onwards, Hanlan’s Point Beach became an important gathering place for Toronto’s gay community. In 1971, a Gay Pride parade was organized on the beach – notably, this was the first such event in Canada.
In the 1990s, nude sunbathers from Toronto and other areas began frequenting the beach. In 1999, the Toronto City Council approved a one-year pilot project to establish a nude beach at Hanlan’s Point. This decision was the culmination of years of advocacy by the queer community to preserve this location as a safe space for all visitors.
Modern Development of the Nude Beach
However, not everyone was pleased that Hanlan’s Point became a nude beach. Conservative parties in Toronto opposed the city council’s decision.
Despite dissatisfaction and even some police crackdowns, the beach began to attract attention. The unconventional beach led to a noticeable increase in ferry traffic, and Toronto became even more appealing thanks to Hanlan’s Point Beach. Today, the beach allows both clothed and fully nude sunbathing, with these zones clearly separated.
What You Can See at Hanlan’s Point Beach
Beyond nude sunbathing, the beach offers other recreational activities. A bicycle path runs through Hanlan’s Point Beach, offering stunning views of the lake and surrounding nature. There are also outdoor tennis courts and volleyball courts, making it an ideal spot for family outings and active recreation. And, of course, a picnic area, with 12 designated picnic spots.
The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse is a highlight of this beach, considered one of Toronto’s oldest landmarks. Construction of the lighthouse began in 1803. Initially, it stood at 16 meters, and in 1832, it was extended to a height of 25 meters.
It’s important to add that over the years, the lighthouse served as a vital landmark for ships entering Toronto Harbour. Many legends also surround this lighthouse, which likely contributes to its strong appeal for tourists.
Hanlan’s Point Beach is one of the few nude beaches in Canada officially sanctioned by the city authorities. It’s a unique place that many believe remains a symbol of tolerance and freedom. This place has a rich history and attracts visitors from all corners of the world.
