Berczy Park — the dog fountain of Old Town Toronto

A tiny triangular plaza beside the landmark Flatiron building, where twenty-seven cast-iron dogs (and one very patient cat) forever spout water toward a golden bone. It’s one of downtown’s most beloved and photographed pocket parks.

Getting there & practical

The park sits in the St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood of Old Town Toronto, right beside the landmark Gooderham (Flatiron) Building. It’s an easy walk from Union Station and well served by nearby streetcars. Entry is free and the plaza is open daily; half an hour is plenty, and it pairs perfectly with a browse through the neighbouring St. Lawrence Market.

When to visit

The fountain is the photogenic centrepiece and runs spring through fall, when the dogs spout and the perennial garden fills with summer colour — the warmest months are the liveliest. In winter the fountain is drained and switched off, so time a visit for the milder seasons if the dogs are what you’ve come to see.

The park is named for William Berczy, a co-founder of the town of York (later Toronto). It first opened in 1980, was redesigned by Claude Cormier + Associés and reopened in June 2017, and went on to win a national landscape-architecture award in 2018.
