Edwards Gardens — a former private estate blooming across a Don Valley ravine
Edwards Gardens is a public botanical garden in the Don Mills area of North York, draped across the wooded slopes of the Wilket Creek ravine. Manicured lawns and rose beds crown the uplands, while one of the largest rockeries in Canada tumbles down into the valley — formal above, wild within.
Highlights
- The great rockery — one of the largest in Canada, cascading through the ravine in stone and planting.
- Wilket Creek — winds past footbridges and a small waterfall along the valley floor.
- The Greensward — a formal manicured lawn with a central fountain, a favourite for wedding and portrait photography.
- Themed plantings — roses and perennials on the uplands; wildflowers, rhododendrons and an arboretum in the valley.
- Toronto Botanical Garden — shares the site, along with a children’s Teaching Garden.

Getting there & practical
The gardens sit in the Don Mills area of North York and are reachable by public transit. Admission is free, and the grounds are open daily from morning until dusk; allow one to two hours, longer if you wander into the ravine. Note that some ravine slopes and stairs are steep.
When to visit
Late spring through summer is the peak, when roses, perennials, rhododendrons and wildflowers all bloom. Autumn brings warm colour to the ravine and arboretum, and the quietest hours are weekday mornings.
Good to know
The land was first settled in 1817 by Scottish miller Alexander Milne, whose family kept it for roughly a century. In 1944 businessman Rupert E. Edwards bought the property and built the estate garden with its great rockery. The City acquired the land in the 1950s and opened it publicly as Edwards Gardens in 1956; the Toronto Botanical Garden moved onto the site in 1959.
Visitor tips
- Come on a weekday morning for the calmest, least crowded gardens.
- Wear sturdy shoes if you plan to explore the ravine slopes and stairs.
- Follow the creek paths to link into the wider Wilket Creek ravine trails.
