Getting there & practical

The gardens sit in the Don Mills area of North York and are reachable by public transit. Admission is free, and the grounds are open daily from morning until dusk; allow one to two hours, longer if you wander into the ravine. Note that some ravine slopes and stairs are steep.

When to visit

Late spring through summer is the peak, when roses, perennials, rhododendrons and wildflowers all bloom. Autumn brings warm colour to the ravine and arboretum, and the quietest hours are weekday mornings.

Good to know

The land was first settled in 1817 by Scottish miller Alexander Milne, whose family kept it for roughly a century. In 1944 businessman Rupert E. Edwards bought the property and built the estate garden with its great rockery. The City acquired the land in the 1950s and opened it publicly as Edwards Gardens in 1956; the Toronto Botanical Garden moved onto the site in 1959.
